HUNGRY WALLABY

You have probably heard about our horrific heatwave and and bush fires.  All the east coast states have been affected. Lucky for us in Brisbane we didn't get the heat as bad as in the southern states. However, we have fires raging around the outside of Brisbane. We are lucky not to have any close to us yet. There have been hundreds of homes and properties lost. My heart goes out to these victims.

It is so dry in the nearby forests that the wallabies don't have enough grass to eat so they come to feed in suburban gardens. This guy was disappointed to find that our garden is also frizzled up and dried out with not much to offer. It depresses him and it depresses me but I am better off than those who have lost their house.

I took this with my P&S through my study window.

A wallaby belongs to the Kangaroo family (Macropodea). There are more than 60 different kinds of kangaroos including many different kinds of wallabies. Wallabies are smaller than kangaroos. I think this one is a Red Neck Wallaby. (Hee hee a Redneck!!!)

  1. Diane, how sad. The fires are so scary to me. MY prayers go out to all those who have lost their homes from these fires. I am glad you are safe there. I feel bad for the critters that have to run from the fires too. All around, the fires are a bad thing. I do like your cute wallaby, I hope it finds some food. Stay safe and have a great day.

  5. It's heartbreaking. What is with all this fires everywhere. The earth is burning up. I hadn't heard about the fires until last night when I turned the news on which I rarely have on anymore. So sad. Stay safe. Can you throw some lettuce or something out to that little guy?

  6. What a sweet animal. I have been reading the news on your heat wave and all those terrible fires. Glad you are okay and my heart goes out to all those who have had to deal with them, and to the poor animals also.

  7. Cute photo Diane, but terribly distressing to see how the wildlife suffer during these heatwaves and fires. We have cooled down over here today, have had the seabreeze in all day, heavenly after the extreme heat.

  8. I agree with Linley ... It's distressing to see animals suffering. In the recent bush fires on our West Coast the poor koalas had their feet burnt while trying to scamper away from the fires.

  10. Those fires are so frightening. My thoughts and prayers with all who have been affected in your country. Thanks for the information on the wallaby. I always thought a wallaby was slang for kangaroo. Now you're put me right!

  11. Oh Diane, he's at once both gorgeous and pitiful - will he drink from a saucer of water if you leave it out for him?

I've been following the news as much as I can here. As a born and bred Aussie like yourself, you know that when the temps reach 40C and beyond, things get very, very scary.

  14. What a sweet little creature. (We have a few at our zoo.) So sad that their natural habitat is being burned away (in more ways than one) I hope they find enough to eat so they can survive.
It must be so terrible for the folks who have lost homes in the fires, too. My heart goes out to them. Either too much water or too little. Sigh....

  16. Awww poor little fella. Is there anything your government is, or can do for the wildlife in terms of getting water to them?

I hope this heatwave passes and soon for all of you and my heart also goes out to those who have lost everything.

    Stay safe.

  19. He, or she, looks quite different to our down south wallabies. I try to put out of my mind the horrors that animals have and are facing in extreme heat and fire.

  20. I hope the fires continue to stay away from you. Thanks for the picture of the wallabies. I didn't know there were 'Tennessee' wallabies.

  21. The dreadful fires are making headline news over here, and our thoughts are with all our blogging friends in your lovely country. Stay safe.

  22. What distresses me even more is that a large proportion of the fires each summer are deliberately started. I think the idea that has been put forward about the arsonists being made to come face to face with the burnt animals and people who have lost everything is brilliant.

  23. That wallaby really does have beautiful colouring, and next to your garden pots and plants it looks quite tiny. Better than a garden gnome!

  24. What a cute Redneck he is!
I hope you will continue to be safe where you are. The fires are getting more coverage here than earlier.

  27. I cringe every time I go to read the news or listen to the radio news. I am sick at heart for all the victims of the wildfires. It's sad about your garden, too. It is usually so lush and such a wonderful inspiration to me to actually weed once in a while. Hope the fires stay far away from you.

  28. I love your little REDneck. We don't seem them at all around here ... too many trees and not enough grass. but a RED belly black snake slithered by our refurbished pond today .... eeek.
